Description

The team at LaFontaine Classic Cars is at it again – bringing another highly desirable, rare piece of muscle car history to market. Feast your eyes on this beautiful 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T “V” code 440 6-Pack, complete with build sheet.

Chrysler only produced 847 R/T models with the potent 440 cubic inch engine, 3 – 2-barrel carburetors (6-Pack), and a 4-speed manual transmission making this a very rare find. Chrysler’s line up for 1970 offered several high-powered vehicle models with the 440 6-Pack ranked a close second behind the 426 Hemi dual quad set-up.

This example was restored during previous ownership utilizing the factory original drivetrain along with factory correct interior and exterior colors matching the trim tag, still intact on the inner driver’s side fender under the hood.

This R/T was very clean before the restoration process allowing use of its original sheet metal as a canvas for the factory paint code “FC7” Plum Crazy purple. Once the body was prepped and primed, the eye-catching hue was meticulously sprayed bringing this rare “V” code back to its former glory. The trim, emblems, and moldings were all refurbished or purchased new before installation as would be expected for a car of this caliber.

Looking inside you will find the correct trim tag code “H6X9” black vinyl bucket seats with center console just as it came when new. The code “A62” Rallye dash gauge cluster retains all of the factory gauges including the 150-mph speedometer and optional code “N85”, 8000 rpm tachometer with Rallye dash clock just as it rolled off the assembly line back in 1970. The center console houses the iconic “Pistol Grip” shifter handle bolted to the stock, original, 4-speed shifter. Nothing will put a grin on your face quite like rowing through the gears with a Pistol Grip shifted transmission. Just below the dashboard are “pull” levers for fresh air into the cockpit along with a red fresh air lever that opens and closes the air inlet door in the Shaker hood scoop base providing fresh air to the 3 – 2-barrel carburetors resulting in maximum performance when the need occurs.

Lifting the hood reveals the original, numbers matching, 440 cubic inch big block topped with 3 – 2-barrel Holley carburetors bolted to the correct Edelbrock casted aluminum intake manifold. With 10.5:1 compression ratio, aggressive camshaft profile, and high flowing stock exhaust manifolds, this “V” code 440 pumps out 390 horsepower with an earth moving 490 lb ft of torque. Transferring that power to the rear axle is the strong, reliable, A833 4-speed transmission with correct VIN stamped on the case. Adding to the rarity, this Challenger is equipped with the “A33” Track-Pak featuring the ultra-strong Dana 60 axle housing with Sure-Grip differential normally spinning 3.54 gears, but this car was ordered with the addition of the “A31” option replacing the 3.54 with the taller 3.91 gears for improved off-line acceleration.

The “Track-Pak” option group features the Dana 60 rear axle, Sure-Grip differential, 7 blade mechanical cooling fan, 26″ HD radiator with fan shroud, and Hemi Suspension handling package. This option package was only available on 440 and 426 Hemi engines with 4-speed manual transmission.

Rolling stock consists of factory 14×6 steel Rally wheels wrapped with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires sized 215/70/14 on all 4 corners providing a great look with a smooth, comfortable ride.

If you have been in the market for a true “V” code E-body, with build sheet – no need to look any further. This example not only looks incredible, but it also runs and performs as good as it looks!
